How to kill a zombie, defunct process in linux

New postby hman on Sun Jul 22, 2007 9:33 am

Hi,

I want to kill a zombie or defunct process in linux.

The command
Code: Select all
kill process-id
doesn't seem to work.

The process is not getting killed this way.

These processes are killed/stopped by restarting apache or httpd. But is there any way to kill them with out restarting apache or httpd?

Hi hman,

Have a look and come back with some clear solutions

...removed url..

Also let me know whether the zombie will occupy space even if it exists.

Even
Code: Select all
kill -9 <pid>
will not kill a zombie or defunct process

From what I came to know a zombie process doesn't react to signals because it's not really a process at all, it's just what's left over after it died.
It occurs because of programming error or bad programming.

This happens when a parent process invokes a child process and does not handle its exit properly. The zombie will go away if its parent dies.

So I think it will not cause huge issues?
